SYNOPSIS: On 11/22/2024 at approximately 1933 hours, was found unresponsive in the area of W Dirk St and N Dancer Ln with an apparent gunshot wound to his left rear shoulder. was transported to and was pronounced deceased. At this time, this investigation is still on going. (

NARRATIVE: On 11/22/2024 at approximately 1934 hours, I was dispatched to a reported shooting in the area of W DIRK ST in the City of Maricopa within the County of Pinal. Call notes advised the reporting party was a witness and heard a gun shot then went outside to find a male subject laying on the ground. Call notes also advised multiple subjects were running eastbound on W Dirk St from N Dancer Ln. At approximately 1938 hours, I arrived on scene and observed a white male subject standing on the northwest corner of W Dirk St and N Dancer Ln waving me down. Let it be known I did not observe any subjects or vehicle leaving the scene at the time of my arrival. I exited my vehicle and was advised by the male subject where the victim was laying by pointing towards him (west side of N Dancer Ln). I observed the alleged victim to be laying next to a dark colored SUV. I observed the subject to be a Hispanic male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with dark pants. The male subject was laying next to the front passenger side tire. I called out to the male subject who was not moving and appeared to be unresponsive. I placed my hand on the male subject and shook him in attempt to get a response but was unsuccessful. At this time, I grabbed the rear of the male subject's pants to pull him out from under the front of the vehicle as to his shoulders and up were under the vehicle. I laid the male subject on his back and observed what appeared to be pink and white fluid coming from his nose which appeared to be a possible overdose. I attempted to check if the male subject had a pulse which I did not find one. Due to what I observed to be a possible overdose and no immediate sign of trauma to the body, I began to administer Narcan on the subject through his nostril. Let it be known that there was no blood found on the male subject initially to suggest he was a victim of a gunshot wound. At this time, Ofc Gomez arrived on scene and I began to start CPR on the male subject until Ofc Wiemiller arrived and took over CPR. Shortly after, I took over CPR once again until MFD arrived on scene and began treating the male subject. While standing back as MFD began treating the male, I observed blood underneath the male's left shoulder. The male subject was then transported to where at 2024 hours was pronounced deceased. At this time, I contacted the white male subject who waved me down initially who I determined to be the original reporting party and identified him as Rodney Johnston (

INITIAL INTERVIEW WITH RODNEY: I asked Rodney if he heard a gunshot to which he advised "yes" as he advised it sounded like a cap-gun. Rodney advised him and his wife were sitting in their living room at W DIRK ST with their rear sliding glass door open. Rodney stated he heard what he assumed to be juveniles on N Dancer Ln talking. Rodney stated he then heard the loud pop and a vehicle speed off from the area going south on N Dancer Ln and take a right on W Guilder Ave. Rodney advised he did not see the vehicle but the vehicle sounded like a 4-cylinder vehicle that he recognized to possibly have an altered muffler as it "rattled" going down the road. Rodney stated he went into his back yard and looked over his wall to see what was happening and did not see anything but heard something groaning to which he looked down and saw a dark colored "blob". At this time, Rodney asked his wife to get a flashlight to which he then saw the male subject laying on the ground next to the vehicle not moving. Rodney also advised he saw a black pistol laying next to the male subject on the ground. PHOTOGRAPHING: At this time, I was requested to photograph the scene and proceeded to use my department issued cell phone to take pictures of the scene (uploaded to Evidence. com) . OFFICAL STATEMENT FROM RODNEY: Once I finished photographing, I was instructed by Cpl Takagi to collect an official written statement from Rodney and proceeded to his residence. I stood by in his residence and witnessed him write his statement (see attached). I asked Rodney to summarize what he witnessed as well: Rodney advised that at approximately 1932 hours, he heard what he believed to be juveniles outside on N Dancer Ln. He proceeded to hear a loud pop and then something being dropped onto the ground. He stated then he heard a car driving away with a rattling exhaust. Rodney proceeded to look over his wall which faces N Dancer Ln and initially did not see anything. Rodney then heard a moan so he proceeded to get a flashlight and looked over the wall again finding the male subject laying on the ground. Rodney stated he also saw a black pistol laying on the slope of the curb next to him. Rodney then proceeded to call 9-1-1 as he began walking towards his front door. Rodney stated that as he ran out of his front door he encountered a male subject running eastbound on W Dirk St. Rodney stated the male subject running was observed to be approximately 5' 10" wearing a hoodie sweatshirt with plaid pajama pants. Rodney stated the male subject ducked in between two houses on the north side of W Dirk St. Rodney stated that shortly after, 4 to six more possible juveniles emerged from behind a vehicle and also ran eastbound on W Dirk St. Rodney advised two of the subjects were female as one was wearing a black tank top with pajama pants. Rodney advised all subjects turned northbound on N Madison Rd and he then lost sight of them. ASSISTING CID: At 2052 hours, Detective Ramos arrived on scene where the incident was handed over to CID. I advised Sgt Jordan of the information officers gathered thus far. While CID was processing the scene, a Hispanic male and female approached the scene and asked if their son was involved. At this time, Detective Ramos began speaking with them and I was advised the male victim to be identified as ( I was requested by Detective Ramos to locate a possible suspect by the name of " An in-house search located one ( who matched the description given by witness Rodney as well as video obtained from

of W FARRELL RD on the Ak-Chin Indian Reservation. I contacted Ak-Chin and requested Ak-Chin officers to meet myself, Detective Ramos, and Ofc Wetherell at the residence to attempt contact with At 2207 hours, contact was attempted at the residence with no answer at the front door. Parked in front of the home was a silver Mercedes with Arizona license plate CTS9227 which matched the description of the vehicle leaving the scene as viewed on a security camera on W Guilder Ave by Ofc Hawkins (see supplemental report). Shortly after attempting contact, a large truck pulled into the driveway where officers contacted Karen Gardner ( Karen advised is her niece's, Andrea ( son who lives in Maricopa and not at this current residence. Karen advised she did not know Andrea's address but provided her phone number. Andrea provided consent to search the Mercedes and it was determined the vehicle was not involved in the incident. W DIRK ST. I stood by as scene security as CID continued to document the scene and collect evidence. Officers cleared from the scene and returned to the original scene at

This incident was turned over to CID for further investigating. This concludes my involvement in this case.

On 11/22/2024 at approximately 2000 hours, I was contacted by Sgt. Jordan due to an active investigation of a shooting that occurred in the Meadows Subdivision. The shooting happened around the area of W. Dirk St and N Dancer Lane. I was advised that one person was struck, and they were transported to While receiving the briefing, I was then notified that the subject had since died. The victim was identified as a year-old male juvenile. The victim lived a few houses away. I was advised several outstanding subjects fled the scene. I arrived in the area, which was still an active crime scene. I was notified that one possible involved party was in a patrol vehicle. The involved party was not forthcoming with the officers. I was advised she would only provide a first name, Later identified to be a year-old female juvenile. The juvenile was later transported to the police station after contact was made with her mother for an interview.

SCENE WALKTHROUGH:

I walked through the crime scene of the shooting. North Dancer Lane is a pass-through road between W. Dirk St. and W Guilder Ave. There were two vehicles parked on the west side of the street that have been parked. The cars appeared not to have been moved due to the level of dust and dirt collected on them. There was a large pool of blood on the west sidewalk area around the vehicles. There were a few medical items left over from the Maricopa Fire Department on the ground. Underneath one of the vehicles was a bright red piece of what was originally thought to be gum. However, upon closer examination, it appeared to possibly be a piece of his lung or other biological material. It appeared the victim may have coughed it up before he expired. Not far from where the blood was was a pool of vomit of foam and blood. Around the street were various boxes from vapes. Please see Civilian Investigator S. Ballard's supplement for further information for photographs and the collection of evidence from the scene.
