BUSINESS

BRIEF

After rumors flew this summer about hardware store Harbor Freight coming to Maricopa, officials finally confirmed the claims. Calabasas, Calif.-based Harbor Freight Tools announced a new location in the former 99 Cents Only store on Edison Road and John Wayne Parkway. It is estimated to open in December. The location was a mix of everything the company wanted, said spokesperson Donna Walker. This included good visibility, ample parking and the right square footage. In the eyes of Harbor Freight, Maricopa has “a wide pool of qualified applicants” to join the staff when the store opens. It will hire 25 to 30 people.

Copia Power

A solar energy farm is proposed on nearly 1,100 acres at Hidden Valley and Val Vista Roads, adjacent to Salt River Project’s Pinal West Substation. The solar farm project proposed by Phoenix developer Sawtooth Development Co. on behalf of Hidden Valley Ranch Partners is in the early Pinal County planning stages. It seeks a major comprehensive plan amendment to change the land use allowed on the acreage from low-density residential to green energy production. Copia Power, which owns large-scale solar operations in the U.S., would operate the sun-power facility. It is developing nine solar facilities in Arizona and is backed by Carlyle Portfolio Company, one of the world’s largest global investment firms.

SATISFACTORY

After months of watching the big-box building go up, Maricopa residents finally entered Home Depot. The home improvement store’s opening has been many years in the making. Plans were originally announced in 2007, but the company shelved those plans because of the Great Recession. Whispers of the hardware giant coming to town re-emerged last April and construction began in December, a big step for Maricopa. Then-City Manager Rick Horst estimated Home Depot would “generate about $1 million a year” in tax revenue for the city during a presentation to the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce.

Hidden Valley’s only restaurant has embarked on a wild pizza experiment. The local watering hole is offering unique weekend pizza specials, such as its “Natcho Average Pizza,” a nacho cheese sauce-based pie topped with tortilla chips, ground beef, lettuce, pickled jalapeños, black olives, tomatoes, onions, sour cream and even more nacho cheese. “We’re going to do a Wild Weekend series for the next few months or so,” said marketing manager Kaylee Del Cotto. Raceway will announce each weekend’s special on its Facebook page, which will not only feature entrees or appetizers — there might be drinks and desserts involved.
