JROTC SCHOOLS IN ARIZONA

L OGAN TROUT was ready to join Maricopa High School’s JROTC program when he was a middle school student. “I’ve been planning it for years,” he says, enthusiastically. Finishing the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps as a captain in his third year, Trout graduated early this year at age 17, then headed for Lackland Air Force Base, where he underwent boot camp training. From there, he will train for his chosen post as a base security guard. For Trout, ROTC has

Trout as “very thorough, charismatic, reliable and a great communicator and team builder.” We could put him on a team and would get it done,” Kirksey added. He said he believes Trout was largely influence in his decision to go into security forces by Chief Burton, who also served in security forces as a squadron leader. “He probably patterned himself on after Chief Burton,” Kirksey said. “I think he’ll do an outstanding job in the Air Force.” The son of Jennifer Rouse and William Trout II, the hard-working student with a 3.7 GPA has been a recruiter for Maricopa High School’s JROTC program. MHS JROTC has 87 cadets, 40% of whom are female and all whom routinely volunteer their time to help put on school events. Cadet officers like Trout serve JROTC by keeping membership strong. “Mostly, my job is to go to the middle schools and look at people [to recruit],” he says.

Trout accelerated his senior-year class load, including honors math, criminal justice, an extra American history class and an English class this year. He graduated as an enlistee in the Air Force on the G.I. Bill, a student finishing on his graduating class’s honor roll and a National Honor Society member. He hopes to serve 20 years in the military before retirement. Until then, he has early plans as a front gate guard at the airbase he’s assigned, wherever that might be. He hopes to train, possibly as a SWAT member. He says he believes ROTC at Maricopa High has helped him prepare for the military. “It’s given me purpose,” he says. “It’s something I can do to help me improve my country.”

He says he owes his lessons in discipline to his ROTC instructors, Lt. Col. Allen Kirksey and Chief Master Sgt. Scott Burton. “My chief and colonel in ROTC helped me focus in on life and understand that I’m in control,” Trout said. “They want to make sure that we succeed in life, and that’s one of the most important things to me about ROTC.” Lt. Col. Kirksey praised
