No wins, no problem The Maricopa High School girls’ flag football team entered the final stretch of its season winless at 0-6, still searching for its first victory in the program’s second year. Bright spots: Senior dual- threat playmaker Larissa Lopez Gutierrez ranked third in the 5A San Tan Region with 170 rushing yards and recorded three sacks while leading the Rams in quarterback hurries. Sophomore Zena Palmer was the team’s only player to score multiple touchdowns. Junior quarterback Miah Zapata connected on a 78-yard pass, the team’s longest of the season. Freshman Neveah Williams averaged 2.3 tackles per game and led the Rams with four sacks, ranking 15th statewide in 5A. Despite the record, MHS’s young roster showed flashes of growth heading into its final games, with the season set to conclude Nov. 6 at Mountain Pointe in Phoenix.

Hot start The Maricopa High School varsity girls’ volleyball team won its Sept. 18 bout against the Mountain View (Marana) Mountain Lions, one victory in the Rams’ early 4-0 start. Since then, the team has battled through a season of highs and hard-earned lessons, entering the final stretch with a 12-12 record and a push toward postseason form. As of publication time, sophomore Peytyn Figueroa led the offense with 4.3 kills per set, while senior Aylani Washington anchored the defense with six digs per set and a team-high 1.3 aces per set. Juniors Ryli Benson and Ashlynn Ford provided power at the net, and senior setter Soleil Woodard fueled the attack with steady playmaking. At press time, MHS was preparing to close the regular season with key matchups against Kofa, Catalina Foothills, Mountain View and Casa Grande in the final week of October — three of them on the road.
