Dust in the wind Maricopa’s skies delivered drama long before the first raindrops arrived Some storms bring rain. Others bring dramatic skies and a healthy respect for the Sonoran Desert’s monsoon season. A July 13 drive along State Route 347 turned into a front-row seat as a haboob swept across the highway, forcing drivers to hunker down as visibility dropped to near zero.

PULL ASIDE, STAY ALIVE

If you’re caught in a dust storm: Pull off the road.

Exit the highway or pull completely off the paved roadway as soon as it’s safe. Turn off your lights. Shut off your headlights and emergency flashers so other drivers don’t mistake your vehicle as a guide. Stay put. Set the parking brake, keep your seat belt fastened and wait for the storm to pass.
