Maricopa and Pinal Counties had already hit a grim milestone: 13 pediatric drownings in the first half of 2024, which was more than the entire previous year. But one tragic death slipped through the cracks. Samuel “Luke” Rosales, just 1 year old, drowned in a Stanfield pool. His family raised over $1,000 for his funeral, while the authorities launched an investigation into the incident that remains ongoing. Arizona’s drowning rates for kids under 5 are alarmingly high compared to national averages.

Two manufactured homes in Hidden Valley tied for the least expensive abodes sold in zip codes 85138 and 85139 in 2024. A two-bed, two-bath mobile home at 20531 N. Rapids Court, just off Hidden Valley Road near State Route 238, sold in July for $130,000, $68,000 below asking price. The home sits on 1¼ acres with a shared well, its own septic system and water storage tank. Some of its selling points were that it is horse friendly and has nice mountain views. It was then flipped and resold three months later for $250,000

WHEN A FLASHLIGHT TUTORIAL BECAME DEADLY JUNE

MOST EXPENSIVE This hillside home won’t make you go postal — it’ll make you go coastal. At first glance, the property evokes thoughts of crashing waves and chirping seagulls, but replace the salty air with a dusty haboob, and the seagulls with roadrunners, and you’ve got yourself this Malibu, ahem, Maricopa Dream House. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home nestled on a mountainside in Thunderbird Farms brings a splash of beachy vibes to the Sonoran Desert in the form of a vibrant 2,000-square-foot abode on 3½ acres. The kitchen and living room feature panoramic views of the backyard and its beach-themed pool. The interior decor consisted of various oceanfront paintings, minimalistic furniture and plenty of greenery when the home was sold in May. But today, it is back on the market at $775,000 (down from $800,0000) with a new paintjob and no more beachy furniture. 13060 N. Palomino Road May 20 750,000 $

A lesson in gun accessories became a horrifying tragedy for Jacob N. Begaye and his six family members. While demonstrating a flashlight attachment on his 9-millimeter handgun in a Homestead kitchen, the 31-year-old accidentally discharged the weapon. The hollow-point round struck him under his right arm, fatally wounding him. Begaye collapsed moments after realizing he’d been shot. Family members begged him to hold on, but he died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. Investigators revealed that Begaye had reloaded the firearm mid-demonstration, unwittingly setting the stage for the accident.
