I I’M WRITING TO YOU JUST AFTER RETURNING FROM Buffalo, N.Y., a trip that really got me thinking about things back home in Maricopa. First, it was a biting 43 degrees and rainy when I touched down at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Back home, we had already eclipsed triple digits on the thermometer en route to what experts grimly predict may be our worst summer on record for wildfires and heat deaths. To be honest, as a red-blooded southerner who’s spent the last few years in metro Phoenix, I’ve always remarked at how easy it is to forget the entire country isn’t being smothered by the late spring sun this time of year, and how callow I must be to ever think otherwise. But the excursion largely got me thinking about just how good we have it here in Maricopa. As managing editor of the most-circulated print news publication in Pinal County, I understand the influence I wield when it comes to platforming community voices, which is why I indefatigably work to understand public perception on a personal level and field questions and concerns daily about the burdens this community bears. Traffic, crime, apartments — it’s all rooted in unease over our city’s rapid and unprecedented growth. Here’s some perspective I brought home with me. Buffalo is a city that’s lost more than half its population since 1950. Sure, their demographic trends mean less traffic on the roads. But instead, the city sees a poverty rate over 28% — seventh worst in the country and five times Maricopa’s — and a median household income half that of Maricopa in the state with the heaviest tax A tale of two cities

burden in the union, according to Intuit. That means fewer jobs and much higher crime rates than when the city was growing. The other thing that struck me was the sheer number of Buffalo Bills flags, signs and mailbox decals. Literally, it feels like every house is repping the Bills Mafia in some conspicuous way. It reminded me of

when I was heading up a newspaper back in Virginia, in a city half the size of Maricopa, when the Bills picked Tremaine Edmunds from my then-local high school in the 2018 NFL Draft. That city was shrinking quickly, too, as were its schools and their athletic budgets. The sports cognoscenti back in Virginia lamented he’d be the first and last product out of that city, established in 1793, to

make the big leagues. Our own hometown hero, who occupies the cover of this issue, is also the first local talent taken in the NFL Draft. But for a city established just 20 years ago, coaches and administrators in the Maricopa school district tell me he’ll be the first of many as budgets increase and facilities improve — thanks to our city’s growth. You’ll read all about that, and how the Maricopa native Jacob Cowing came to hear his name called at this year’s NFL Draft, in this month’s tell-all cover story. When I tune into the San Francisco 49ers games this fall to cheer on that former Maricopa High School Ram, I’ll be thinking about how Jacob’s story came to be — because his parents loved Maricopa so much, they moved here from out of state. We all moved here because we love Maricopa in our own way. And living in a lovable city ain’t so bad if you ask me.

THE PLACE FOR A GIFT FOR DAD

In 1990, construction started on Maricopa Town Centre, a shopping plaza on Hathaway Avenue next to the U.S. Post Office, which opened about the same time. The artist’s rendering of architect Jonathon Martens’ design showed the first, 5,100-square-foot phase of the planned Newport Properties project. Today, the shopping center is home to a chiropractor, dentist, gunsmith and butcher.

A tribute to a hardworking grandfather Meet Ronnie, a father of three and a grandfather of six. The veteran and schoolteacher spent his free time as a handyman, who worked on people’s homes in his community, Redondo Beach, Calif. “He built the house that my grandmother still lives in from dirt to roof,” Jess fondly recalls. “I actually have a tattoo on my arm of the address because it represents my childhood and the hard work my grandfather instilled in us,” Jess shares. Ronnie’s dedication to craftsmanship and family values left a lasting impression.

“As a little girl, I remember accompanying my grandpa on his side projects,” Jess reminisces. “We would go to the local hardware store, South Bay Hardware, to pick up any tools he needed for the job.” Those rides in Ronnie’s 1979 Ford truck are etched in Jess’s memory. “I never expected to be working at a place that reminded me so much of him,” Jess reflects. Ronnie may no longer be with us, but his legacy lives on. “Every time I get to talk about tools or share my knowledge with our guests, I think about how proud he is.” Jess continues to honor Ronnie’s memory through her work and carries his spirit with her every day.

A construction worker fell to his death through a roof at a home on West Mediterranean Way in Sorrento. Roofer Joshua Call, 30, was working on a truss installation at the ranch home when he stepped on the peak and it broke off, according to a U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration report, which said Call was not wearing fall protection before plummeting 15 feet onto a concrete surface. It remains the only OSHA-investigated fatality in Maricopa since 2017. No citation was issued to Call’s employer.

The gas pumps at Fry’s Marketplace started flowing, marking the first Maricopa fuel station east of John Wayne Parkway. The soft opening offered prices of unleaded at $2.97 per gallon and diesel at $2.85. “We manage fuel prices a little bit different [than groceries],” said Chad Fife, then-assistant director of retail operations. He said competitors should conform more to Fry’s prices, which would spell good things for Maricopa pocketbooks.

An aircraft hangar fire destroyed eight restored aircraft and eight vintage motorcycles just outside Maricopa. Maricopa and Ak-Chin Indian Community firefighters responded to the hanger in a remote area of Mobile, where the hangar was already fully engulfed in flames. They fought to stop the spread through surrounding desert brush. “Losing this collection of restored vintage aircraft and motorcycles is a devastating loss, and our hearts go out to the owner,” then-Battalion Chief John Pantoja said. No one was injured..

Voters chose Kelly Anderson as Maricopa’s first elected mayor during the city council’s June 1 meeting at Maricopa High School. “It has been an honor serving as your first mayor of Maricopa,” then-interim mayor Edward Farrell said as he transitioned the power to Anderson, who had served as a council member.

Maricopa Police Department data from a 12-month period ending April 30 details every crime committed that year, sorted by neighborhood and type of crime. Aside from 7 Ranches, which only had 18 households, Maricopa Manor had the highest per-household crime rate of one crime per household, triple that of the second-most dangerous neighborhood, Desert Cedars. To the surprise of many, no doubt, apartment complexes by and large did not see crime rates higher than single-family neighborhoods. The community with the lowest crime rate was Province, with 16 crimes per 1,000 households. Province had the most vehicle thefts, and Tortosa had the most total crimes. Editor’s note: These numbers include crimes committed immediate to a neighborhood, like a main crossroads or business on the opposing side of a residential street. The crime rate is based off built units as of May 13. Crimes per 1,000 households.

MAN ACCUSED OF PERVING on at least five young women at Copper Sky was dealt a lifetime ban from the city’s public gym after reports surfaced containing odious and sordid descriptions of sexual harassment. The disturbing incidents, which turned the heads of police, are a symptom of the growing #GymCreep trend, which has exploded on TikTok with a whopping 100 million views in the U.S. in the past year. The recent trend emboldens women who’ve endured being followed or groped at the gym — 9 in 10 incidents go unreported, studies reveal — to finally speak out, as a handful of fed-up fitness enthusiasts did in reports released to InMaricopa last month. A

The victims identified Copper Sky member Robert White as a threat in several encounters spanning from May 2023 until March when city officials launched an investigation into the alleged sexual assailant. Weight watcher Copper Sky, known as a haven for local gym rats, turned into a nightmare for one young woman last May when White followed her out to her car and asked her if she’s ever seen a “black ****,” according to a March 11 report. White allegedly kept chasing her even after she got into her car, ordering her through the driver’s side window to “pull down her pants and show him her *****,” according to the report.

Another young woman said White harassed her at the gym for several months, forcing her to change her workout schedule in January because White “kept staring at her while she worked out” and eventually approached her, repeatedly demanding she send him nude photographs of herself. On March 1, White confronted her in the parking lot, looked her up and down and said, “That’s why everyone wants to **** you,” according to the report. Another woman also changed her workout times to avoid seeing White because “he was consistently coming up behind her to talk about her *** and what he would do to that,” among other comments too vulgar to repeat, a city official reported.

The report also mentions a teenaged girl who stopped coming to the gym altogether after White told her to “show him her *****.” White’s workout partner eventually broke off their friendship, admitting to a city official his ex-buddy “should’ve been kicked out a long time ago.” Recreation Superintendent David McLeish said March 6 he planned to suspend White’s membership as city officials began investigating at least five sexual harassment complaints women lodged against White. On May 3, Community Enrichment Director Quinn Konold confirmed to InMaricopa , “This membership was terminated.” Five days later, Konold also confirmed law enforcement was involved, saying, “Maricopa Police Department was notified.” As of publication time, White hadn’t been charged with a crime. One-third of female gym members have changed routines to avoid their harassers, while one-fourth switched gyms or stopped using gyms completely. “Harassment is a prevalent issue in gyms, one that disproportionately impacts female gym members. Despite how many experience this issue, less than one-tenth of members report their harassment,” Rizzo said. “It’s the responsibility of studios, health clubs and the likes to provide a safe environment for members to work out and enjoy the benefits of exercise.” According to the Copper Sky Code of Conduct, verbal harassment, disrespectful behavior, intimidation, using profanity and sexual misconduct are all bannable offenses — and White was guilty of each, if the allegations against him are true. Those are five of the 22 documented examples of punishable misconduct, with others including illegal substance use, theft, vandalism, weapons, trespassing and fraud. “To ensure all members have a positive experience, we make safety a top priority and take any of our patrons’ safety concerns seriously,” top gym bro McLeish told InMaricopa May 7. “We encourage everyone to inform staff immediately if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.” Staff will then determine the appropriate action, depending on severity, whether that means escalating the incident to higher management, informing park rangers or even police, as they did with White. “A resolution to an incident could include exclusion from the facility, if necessary,” McLeish noted, nodding at White’s prohibition from the public fitness hub. “We also encourage patrons to notify the police if they suspect a crime has been committed.” Inside the viral trend The #GymCreep trend this year has cropped up all over headlines in the likes of BBC, Newsweek , The Guardian and USA Today . So much so, the slang term has gone from colloquy to an accepted term in academic spaces. “I’m so happy that a notorious gym creep was banned in Maricopa,” said Dr. Leilani Carver-Madalon, a communication professor at Maryville University in Town and Country, Mo., May 9.

I’m not making this up,’” said Carver-Madalon. “This can be a great tool in making men aware of how they can be creepy when they don’t intend to be, but also in making gyms aware of how they can empower women to report creepy men at the gym.” However, a study from the Stanford University Department of Psychology found posting legitimate outrage on social media can appear excessive and unjust, and the feedback loop of online shaming can kindle feelings of sympathy for the offender. Others think the trend has simply gone too far. Los Angeles fitness coach Joey Swoll recently stirred up controversy online when he started engaging with TikTok videos from women using the #GymCreep tag, saying there is a “big difference” between “looking or glancing” at a woman and “being an actual creep,” sparking a divisive reaction across social platforms. The best course of action, Carver-Madalon says, is to do what five women in Maricopa did recently — think twice about hopping on the TikTok trend and focus instead on long- term solutions to the problem, like reporting harassment to the proper authorities. “We never want to make someone who has been harassed feel like they’re doing the wrong thing, because the harassment is real,” she said. “It’s not their fault that these creeps are following them around.” But she offered some merit to the viral trend: “Social media is a powerful tool, and we can use it to create awareness and hopefully educate men on how they may be a gym creep, even if they don’t intend to be.”

Now in its fourth year, about 200 high schoolers showed out to the effervescent event the night of May 11, Dayley said. “The energy
