16 Tesla Tesla filed plans to build Maricopa’s first- ever electric vehicle supercharging station in the parking lot of Fry’s Marketplace. The proposed site would include 16 high-speed charging stalls along with the necessary electrical equipment to power them, plus lighting and garbage bins. The facility would be unmanned and operate 24 hours a day. If approved, the station would be the largest public charging facility in Maricopa and one of the largest in Pinal County. It would serve both local EV drivers and commuters on State Route 347, according to Dewberry Engineers. There are more than 800 state- registered electric vehicle owners in Maricopa, an all-time high, according to the Motor Vehicle Division. 17 Thrifty Ice Cream After 85 years, Thrifty Ice Cream’s future is uncertain after drug store Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Most assets will be sold, including the El Monte, Calif., Thrifty brand.
Locally, Maricopa Water & Ice is the only retailer that sells Thrifty’s ice cream by the scoop. Owner Tonya Thompson said it’s a big draw for customers — ice cream sales make up roughly 30% of her revenue — but she’s not overly worried. “I’m not panicking about it,” she said. “I’m looking at it as they’re restructuring, reorganizing and that more than likely they’re going to have a buyer and we’ll be able to continue selling their products.” If it folds, her plan B is to transition to a different flagship brand. “I definitely have other avenues that I can take to bring in different stuff and it’s already products my customers know I carry here anyway,” she said.
simple, fresh paint and minor updates.” In addition to street taco classics like carne asada, al pastor and pollo, the Maricopa location will introduce a new item: papas locas, a loaded baked potato topped with meats, cheese and signature sauces. 15 Super Star Car Wash A new express car wash is on its way to the southwest corner of John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Avenue. Phoenix-based Super Star Car Wash plans to turn a roughly 2-acre empty lot into a full-service facility with an automated wash tunnel and self- serve vacuum stations. The proposal, resubmitted in June and currently under review by the city, outlines a 4,000-square-foot wash tunnel featuring a high-efficiency conveyor system, three express pay stations and 20 vacuum bays, down from 34 in the initial March 2024 proposal. The car wash would be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
