Inaugural pitch BY DAVID IVERSEN The Desert Sunrise High School varsity baseball team held its inaugural home game March 20. It was a meaningful game for the first graduating class at the new school. Until now, the student-athletes played with the Copa A’s, a local club team. Head Coach Andrew Dixon called it a hodgepodge. Now, they have a home field to play on. “This is the third game of the season. Hopes are high, but by the end of the season, hopefully it’ll set in: We just inaugurated this first season here,” said Dixon, motioning to the Desert Sunrise field before the Golden Hawks’ first home game. As is tradition at ballparks across the country, InMaricopa asked if Dixon would allow players to scratch their names in the wood, stake their place in the history of this ballfield. “Oh, I’m all for it. If he’s a graduating senior, absolutely,” said Dixon. Both teams took the field. The

star-spangled banner played. An inaugural first pitch was thrown.

“We are the first varsity and the first graduating class,” said senior Jacoby Garcia. He’s been playing with some of these same kids since he was 12. “Hopefully, we’ll make a little impact and a little history here.” Pitcher Leander Vale was excited to play on this field for the first time in his final year. He’ll continue on next year to study sports therapy and has a message for the kids coming up behind him. “Just have fun,” said Vale. “Do your best.”
