Five Butterfield Elementary School students paraded the halls on the last day of school on new rides supplied by Iconic Tire and Service Center. The students each received a new bicycle and helmet from the tire shop as a reward for not missing a single day of school and got the chance to pedal their way to the front of the annual senior parade. Iconic Tire Corporate Controller Michele Darrow said she hopes it’s the start of a new annual tradition at Butterfield. “We’re kicking this off so Iconic Tire will donate a bike and helmet to every child at the school with perfect attendance for the full year,” Darrow said. “We love our community. Maricopa has supported us, and we want to support them.” Maricopa Water and Ice accepted the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce’s New Chamber Member of the Year award during the annual awards banquet. The store joined the chamber in December and was quickly nominated for the new award. It beat out five other businesses: the CP Glover Foundation, Desert Sun Performing Arts, F.O.R. Maricopa, Thai Chili 2 Go and the UPS Store. “Being nominated and winning the award is such an honor,” Owner Tonya Thompson said. WATER ICE Ice Cream Ice Cream

First-time franchisee Luis Leon and wife Adriana said they hope to begin serving Scottsdale-based Cold Stone Creamery’s frozen treats at the tail end of summer. The ice cream parlor is on track to finish interior construction by the end of the month, followed by hiring, training and grand opening plans in place by August. “We’re getting to the point where we’re starting to think about the grand opening and what we’re going to do as far as events and all of that, but it’s still fairly early right now,” Leon said. The couple recently moved to Tortosa from the West Valley. It’s their first time owning a business and they said they look forward to becoming a larger part of the community. Vero Chicago Pizza flipped on its “open” sign for a soft opening at its seventh location at 19975 N. John Wayne Pkwy., Suite 110. It was an exciting moment for Kitchen Manager Daniel Mejia, whose family owns the Maricopa franchise. “We had an order come in right when we opened today,” he said. “We were like, ‘Yeah, we got one!’” Although it lacks a sit-down dining area, Vero makes up for that with a hefty menu. Its 18 specialty pizzas are named after famous Chicago landmarks, like the Wrigley Field pizza topped with sausage, Italian beef, green peppers and onions. And while Chicago-style pizza from a Chicago-born family is a given here in metro Phoenix, the restaurant also serves more traditional pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and wings.

It’s been a long wait, but Maricopa’s second Taco Bell has finally opened. This time, off the main drag at 42080 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. “We’re excited to be open and share our business with everybody here,” restaurant manager Harlan Roberts said. “We got a full staff. We’re ready to rock and roll.” The city’s second Taco Bell is among several businesses that have come to The Wells shopping center in recent months, including Slim Chickens, Bosa Donuts and Tractor Supply Co. The first location is on the John Wayne strip near Bashas.’

After more than two years of construction, another rental community is ready to hang up its hard hats. Construction is nearing completion at the 151-unit Hampton Edison build-to-rent community at 45305 W. Edison Road and has already welcomed its first tenants amid finishing touches. Paragon Development Group Executive Vice President Scott Turkington said watching the project blossom from an empty lot into a single-family home community over the years was satisfying. “There’s a sense of pride because three to four years ago, you just saw dirt in a location that has a lot of potential,” he said. “But seeing the development and growth, there definitely is a sense of satisfaction, especially with feedback from the existing residents.”

SERVICE AT A HIGHER LEVEL

Maricopa is home to five restaurants that never close. Curious, and a little hungry, InMaricopa asked 400 of our readers which 24-hour spot serves the best victuals to satisfy those witching- hour cravings. Jack in the Box came out on top with 40% of the vote. One in 5 people surveyed professed Rili B’s Taco Shop was all they want to taco ‘bout. In third place was McDonald’s on John Wayne Parkway (16%). Voters did little to butter up the pancake purveyors in town — Denny’s (15%) and IHOP (9%).

Retired Michigan disc jockey Don Lansdale launched Maricopa’s first radio station as an online channel that spins country classics around the clock, some older than the hills and dustier than a truck stop in Tuba City. His radio channel offers top news headlines from InMaricopa , weather and sports as well as country oldies. Now he produces a morning show and an afternoon drive-time show on Live 365.com

No matter which way you slice it, Maricopa is slowly turning into a food truck paradise. Get In My Deli has started slinging bodega favorites from the window of its bright blue truck while parked at Central Arizona College’s Maricopa campus. Co-owner Jenny Headings said serving the first customer felt “unreal.” “It’s kind of crazy,” she said. “It’s been a long process of trying to get it open.” The food truck launched with a limited lunch menu, including
