BRIEF

Duke’s Roadhouse submitted new building and signage plans for its restaurant at Maricopa and Edwards Roads to the city planning department. An updated elevation shows placement for the new sign, a vintage neon roadhouse sign with an arrow and a script-style font. The 8-by-7-foot neon arrow will be mounted to the façade, not on top of the roof as was first planned. An updated site plan illustrates the proposed extension of Edwards Road, located immediately south of Duke’s, with crosswalks and lane dividers. The road will run under the John Wayne Parkway overpass to the Southbridge Marketplace currently under construction. Following months of rumors, Calabasas, Calif.-based Harbor Freight Tools confirmed its intentions to bring a location to Maricopa in the former 99 Cents Only storefront at Edison Pointe. Construction on the building’s interior began in the last days of September and installed a “now hiring” sign on the building. Spokesperson Donna Walker Franchise owner and Tortosa resident Luis Leon said the new Cold Stone Creamery at 17430 N. Porter Road in The Wells had some of the best sales in the state when the parlor served its first scoops last month. “The whole weekend was good in terms of numbers,” he said, but opening day “was a really, really good day for us. I know that our store had one of the top sales in the state.” Cold Stone is a global brand based in Scottsdale. Duke’s Roadhouse

Choice bud will return next year to commercial space in Hidden Valley after a five-year hiatus. Pinal County Planning Manager Gilbert Olgin said a special-use permit is all that stands in the way of getting the new pot business next to Raceway Bar & Grill remodeled and running. “By January we’re hoping to get board of supervisors’ approval and get the permit done,” Olgin said. “Once they get special-use permit approved after the rezone, then they can do tenant improvements to make changes on the inside.” It will be the third pot shop at the location. Two previous shops, both medical and later recreational pot shops, Ponderosa Releaf dispensaries, operated there from 2015 to 2020. Another dispensary, Trulieve, is under construction inside city limits at John Wayne Parkway and Honeycutt Avenue.

Twenty-six wing sauces and 30 beers on tap are a step closer to reality. The Atlanta-based sports bar Buffalo Wild Wings submitted new paperwork to the city’s development department for its restaurant on Stonegate Road at Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. This included a preliminary floorplan showing the general layout of the restaurant, which will employ 30 people. The dining area will seat up to 280 patrons.

As usual, Maricopa showed up for opening day in a big way. Big- box hardware retailer The Home Depot hosted a soft opening for an energetic crowd of hundreds who lined up hours early at its newest location on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway, a prelude to its official grand opening the next day. The doors slid open at 5:45 p.m. and a deluge of excited customers pushing orange carts didn’t stop pouring in for at least 45 minutes. The Atlanta-based home improvement giant first announced its expansion to Maricopa in 2008. After it revitalized those plans last year, a handful of its competitors followed suit, including Lowe’s Home Improvement, Harbor Freight Tools and Tractor Supply Co.

A retail business known for its scaly, crawly critters found a new home in Hidden Valley. Owner Rubin Rivera said Desert Grown Reptiles & Exotics moved from its previous home in the Raceway strip mall to a more rural, residential setting at 49936 W. Mayer Blvd., about a mile to the southwest. A member of the Pinal County Planning & Zoning Commission said a marijuana dispensary will take its former place next to the dive bar.

Paradise, Nev.-based Terrible’s offers “a deliberately different gas station experience,” and it wants to hit the jackpot with a new location in Maricopa. A project narrative submitted to the city’s planning

department detailed a 5,500-square-foot convenience store with ten double-sided fuel pumps and a carwash on the southeast corner of Porter and Bowlin Roads. If built, it would be the first Terrible’s in central Arizona. The ironically named gas station currently operates a handful of locations in western Arizona cities, like Kingman, Quartzsite and Bullhead City, as well as the world’s largest Chevron station in Jean, Nev.
