BRIEF

A sign for La Michoacana The Ice Cream Spot AZ appeared above the former K’Bella Salon and Day Spa at 20800 N. John Wayne Parkway, Suite 116, at the Maricopa Fiesta. “The contractor is still working on the inside, so we don’t have an opening date yet,” said Andre

Gutierrez, who owns the Casa Grande-based Mexican sweets shop with his wife, Jessica. Gutierrez said the menu is “the same as Casa Grande.” Think of everything from refreshing aguas frescas and paletas to filling snacks like duros, mini pancakes and their newest offering, ramen elote (a spicy, cheesy ramen cup nestled inside a nacho volcano). The recipes have been passed down from Mexico over 40 years, the owners said.

Raceway Bar & Grill To those who say Maricopa has too many Mexican restaurants, Raceway Bar & Grill owner Rand Del Cotto says: “Hold my beer.” The Hidden Valley watering hole is reopening on Tuesdays for the first time in a half- decade as “Rando’s,” a pop-up Mexican restaurant, said Del Cotto, who owns Raceway with his wife, Jeanna. For the menu, think taco salads, chiles rellenos, enchiladas, carne asada tacos and Del Cotto’s favorite, fish tacos. “It’s basically our fried fish that everyone loves that we’ve been serving for 17 years the same way,” he said.

An indoor-outdoor family entertainment center is being proposed at Copper Sky Regional Park. A project narrative submitted to the city’s planning department last month detailed plans to “help satisfy a decades-long need” for Maricopa by creating a 4-acre family entertainment center, which would include miniature golf, duckpin bowling, an arcade and ropes course and a café in phase one; bumper boats and go-karts in phase two. “Maricopa needs this,” developer and former Maricopa resident Scott Bartle said. “We need safe, fun activities for kids and families in town.” Family entertainment center

Yogurt Jungle topped eight other cold dessert shops for the crown as Maricopa’s favorite frozen treat stop in an InMaricopa survey of 873 readers last month. The froyo spot known for its massive toppings bar accounted for nearly one-third of the votes. Yogurt Jungle employees cited make-it- yourself vibes as what draws many to the shop. “I think being able to be creative with your food is so exciting for the kids,” said employee Moshe Evans, a Glennwilde resident.

Spicy ramen, s’mores French toast and

tableside “trompito” for two. That’s but a tasting of the unique flair you’ll find at Chilaquiles Modern Kitchen, the metro brunch spot that confirmed it will open its second location in Maricopa. The popular Mesa-based Mexican a.m. restaurant is now hiring staff at the soon-to-be-former sports bar The Roost, which closed its doors for good in December. An employee at The Roost with knowledge of the acquisition confirmed Chilaquiles intended to rehire her and other employees at the sports bar. The space at 20800 N. John Wayne Parkway, Suite 101, in The Shops at Maricopa Fiesta, is expected to be remodeled.

Chandler-based Someburros Mexican Food wants to sell its Sonoran-style dishes near Stonegate Road and Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. Developers submitted pre-application paperwork to Maricopa’s planning department, detailing plans to build a 3,519-square-foot restaurant with patio dining. It will also have a drive-thru window for pickup orders. If the project moves forward, it may join Buffalo Wild Wings, a standalone Starbucks and a second Panda Express just west of Home Depot.
