Maricopa’s first cannabis dispensary broke ground at Honeycutt Avenue and John Wayne Parkway. The future pot shop is the first structure to be built adjacent to the commercial development that will eventually house a Lowe’s Home Improvement store. An Aldi supermarket and several other unidentified retail establishments are also planned in the Southbridge Marketplace shopping center. City planners gave the weed store, which will be called Nirvana, the green light in June. Nirvana Center Dispensaries is a subsidiary of the Trulieve Cannabis Corporation. The city in confirming construction called it “the Trulieve building.” Amid bankruptcy rumors, Seattle- based Mod Pizza, which has a restaurant at 20320 N. John Wayne Parkway, was acquired by a new owner. Los Angeles-based Elite Restaurant Group, which bailed out other struggling restaurateurs like Sizzler and Marie Callender’s, purchased the fast-casual pizza chain in July, saving MOD Pizza from potential ruin. Mod Pizza in April shuttered 26 underperforming restaurants, which caused some to wonder if the Maricopa location would soon close. However, General Manager Cody Morrissey said the bankruptcy is not expected to affect the Maricopa restaurant, which opened in 2021. “Business as usual,” were his words to InMaricopa.

El Segundo, Calif-based Big 5 Sporting Goods, which opened at 41800 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway in 2017, will close permanently Nov. 8. Store employees told InMaricopa the rent tripled, forcing the Maricopa location to shutter. The closure will affect 15 employees who will be “absorbed” by other Big 5 stores. Sources familiar with the building said it would become a school for children with autism and ADHD.

Father-daughter duo Bruce and Cody Kiraly will open the city’s first mattress and furniture store this month. Copa Mattress, 44360 W. Edison Road, Suite 100, is undergoing final tenant improvements before the business opens to the public. The minds behind similar retailers in the metro like Magic Mattress in Tempe will employ five local workers. Copa Mattress promises premium, cooling mattresses at a discount, and other home furnishings from the Ashley brand.

Maricopa Chief Strategy Officer Rick Horst announced Elevate Trampoline Park will build a location at the southwest corner of John Wayne and Alterra Parkways. A preliminary site plan showed the Elevate Trampoline Park

Tempe-based global fuel conglomerate Circle K proposed building a new gas station and convenience store on the southwest corner of Smith-Enke and Porter Roads. The gas station would consist of 16 fuel pumps with a 5,200-square- foot convenience store, where a dozen employees would be hired. The company in December proposed building the gas station on the north side of Smith-Enke Road. It did not disclose in its new proposal why it is opting to move across the street, but it could have something to do with homeowners in The Lakes floating a petition to block the business from building in their backyards.

Mesa-based entertainment venue will consist of a 25,000-square-foot building with indoor dining areas, office space and wall-to-wall trampolines. Horst acknowledged the city needs “more entertainment, more things for kids to do and families to do.”

City officials unveiled two businesses slated for Maricopa’s future industrial park, which is being called the “Maricopa Industrial Triangle.” The officials confirmed the city began accepting bids on the site and announced the San Diego-based Prescott Companies and Cleveland, Ohio-based Envision Waste Services have expressed “serious interest” in developing the property. along with a third unnamed company plan to invest a combined $2.6 billion. The firms would provide recycling services, specifically mixed- waste processing, plastics renewal and waste-to-energy products. During the announcement, Maricopa Chief Strategy Officer Rick Horst said these investments along with another statement of interest “would be a complete metamorphosis of the city.”
