The road ahead In May, the Maricopa City Council approved a new half-cent sales tax that took effect last month to help fund the long- awaited SR 347 widening. Then, a month later, Maricopa residents described the fear they were living in to the Arizona State Transportation Board. They had packed buses and vans the night before, bound for Payson, 110 miles away. ADOT approved the widening. Design will begin next year, with construction set to run from 2027 to 2032.
